Mother's soul (majcina dusica) or breckland thyme (thymus serpyllum) is a many years plant with purple-red flowers. It is one of the most grown and most popular tea plants in Macedonia. It blooms in June and July, sometimes until September. Flowering parts are used and when cutting, the lower part of the plant mustn't be damaged, that's why it is cut with scissors. This plant needs a lot of sun and heat and therefore it can be meet in dry
rocky areas and mountain pastures, where there is a warm soil. I've picked this plant many times my self, it smells delicious and it's a real pleasure to pick it.
Thyme is one of the most commonly used herbs: It is used for almost
everything - from reatment of colds, to kill some microbes. Majcina dusica has antiseptic effect, it is effective in spasm (cramps) and bronchial diseases. Also it is successfully used against cough. Because it tastes good and smells nice, the children gladly drink it. In addition, it successfully acts against intestinal parasites, especially in children's worms.
The most effective ingredient in breckland thyme it is thymol, which is contained in etheric oil. Surface parts of the thyme contain essential oil from 0.1 to 1%.Thyme
has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial activity, facilitates
expectoration of secretions from the lungs and removes pain and weight
in the chest. It is used to treat inflammation of the airways and lungs (bronchitis,
bronchopneumonia, bronchial asthma, laryngitis, tuberculosis).
The mechanism of action of this plant is tied to the presence of thymol. It softens mucus in the airways and stimulates lashes that are coated to airways to easier expel mucus solvent. The action of thyme in cases of common cold and acute bronchitis is scientifically proven. A German study involving 721 patients with bronchitis showed that the extract of thyme relieves cough attacks by 70%.
Due to the high content of thymol, thyme can show and irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the stomach. It is not recommended for long-term use in patients with stomach ulcer or duodenal intestine. Thymol must be carefully dosed and during pregnancy.
Thymol in a dose of 0.05 to 0.10 g used in meteorism (gas hose) and diarrhea.
