EGG BITING (AMKANJE) - PROCHKA CUSTOM

Every holiday has its own traditions, but few are as fun and symbolic as "amkanje jajce", the traditional egg-biting game played on Prochka (Forgiveness Sunday). This custom, once an essential part of the holiday, is slowly fading away, but some families and villages still cherish it as a beautiful memory of times when simple things brought the greatest joy.

What is Amkanje jajce?

A boiled egg (usually white) is tied to a string and hung from the ceiling or another high place. Some tie the egg to a rolling pin or a stick. The rules are simple, but the challenge is real! Participants which are usually children, but sometimes playful adults, must try to catch the swinging egg using only their mouths while keeping their hands tied behind their backs.

The game is always filled with laughter and fun, especially when the egg slips away at the last second.😄

The Symbolism of the Egg on Prochka

Eggs have always symbolized life, fertility, and new beginnings, and Prochka is all about that, purification, forgiveness, and preparing for the Lenten fast. It is believed that whoever successfully bites the egg will be healthy and strong throughout the year.

Do People Still Practice This Tradition?

In the past, no Prochka celebration was complete without amkanje jajce, especially in rural areas. Today, this fun tradition is becoming rare, but some families still keep it alive. Maybe it’s time to bring it back! All you need is an egg, a string and a lot of laughter.

Do you still practice this tradition in your family? Share your memories in the comments! 🥚😊
